Choosing a Replacement Water Filter Cartridge in UAE Homes
A water filter cartridge is the replaceable part of a filtration system that does the actual filtering, and it is also the part most often bought incorrectly. Buyers looking for replacement water filter cartridges in the UAE will find hundreds of listings that look alike but differ in length, diameter, filtration media, micron rating and end fittings. In UAE homes, cartridge life can vary considerably with the filtration system, water consumption, sediment load, building plumbing and manufacturer specifications.
Whether the need is a home water filter cartridge for an under-sink unit or a whole-house replacement, cartridges are not universally interchangeable. Before ordering, it helps to identify the filter housing or system, confirm the cartridge dimensions, check the filtration media and micron rating, and read the manufacturer’s replacement requirements. This guide covers households across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain.

How to Choose the Correct Water Filter Cartridge
A consistent checking sequence reduces the risk of buying the wrong replacement water filter cartridge.
1. Check the filter housing
Identify whether the cartridge sits in a slim housing (about 2.5″ diameter), a Big Blue or jumbo housing (about 4.5″ diameter), an in-line system, a membrane housing or a proprietary quick-change head. Housing labels often carry the size and brand.
2. Find the existing cartridge model number
Model numbers are usually printed on the cartridge, its end cap or the system manual. Searching by model number is more reliable than searching by appearance.
3. Measure cartridge dimensions
Measure length and outside diameter with the old cartridge removed. Nominal sizes are rounded: Pentair’s specification sheets list its “10 inch” P5 sediment cartridge at 2.38″ x 9.88″ (60.5 x 251 mm) and its 10″ Big Blue DGD cartridge at 4.50″ x 9.88″ (114 x 251 mm). Aqua-Pure’s AP810 is listed at 9.75″ x 4.625″. Small differences can affect sealing in some housings.

4. Check the micron rating
Match the micron rating on the old cartridge or in the system manual. A micron is one-thousandth of a millimetre: 1 micron is very fine filtration, 5 micron is common for RO pre-filters, and 20-50 micron suits coarse first-stage filtration. A lower number is not automatically better, because finer cartridges can clog faster and reduce flow. The micron ratings section below explains the trade-off.
5. Identify the filter media
Sediment (PP, string-wound, pleated), GAC, carbon block (CTO), UF, RO membrane, ceramic and specialist media each do different jobs. Replacing a carbon stage with a sediment cartridge of the same size, for example, removes the chlorine protection that RO membranes depend on.
6. Check manufacturer compatibility
The system manual usually lists approved replacement cartridges. “Compatible with” statements on third-party listings are the seller’s claim, not the system manufacturer’s confirmation.
7. Compare replacement cost
Compare price per cartridge, not pack price, and multiply by the number of replacements per year the manufacturer recommends.
Water Filter Cartridge Size and Compatibility Chart
“Nominal” size is the name used in listings (for example 10″ x 2.5″). Actual measurements come from manufacturer documentation and differ slightly.

On mobile, scroll sideways to see the full table.
| Nominal Cartridge Size | Approximate Actual Dimensions | Typical Housing | Common Uses | Interchangeability Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10″ x 2.5″ (standard or slim) | 2.38″ x 9.88″ (60.5 x 251 mm) for Pentek P5; iSpring lists 2.5″ x 10″ for FG15 | Standard 10″ slim housing | Under-sink RO pre-filters, point-of-use filters | Widely interchangeable by size, but media and micron rating must still match the stage |
| 20″ x 2.5″ (standard or slim) | 2.38″ x 20″ (60.5 x 508 mm) for Pentek P5-20 | Standard 20″ slim housing | Larger point-of-entry and light commercial setups | Does not fit 10″ housings; check end-cap style |
| 10″ x 4.5″ (Big Blue or jumbo) | 4.50″ x 9.88″ (114 x 251 mm) for Pentek DGD; Culligan lists 9.75″ x 4.5″; Aqua-Pure AP810 9.75″ x 4.625″ | 10″ Big Blue housing | Whole-house sediment and carbon stages | Diameters vary slightly between brands; confirm fit with the housing maker |
| 20″ x 4.5″ (Big Blue or jumbo) | 4.50″ x 20″ (114 x 508 mm) for Pentek DGD-20 | 20″ Big Blue housing | Villa and higher-flow whole-house systems | Not interchangeable with slim 20″ cartridges |
| 1812 RO membrane (75 GPD class) | 11.74″ (298 mm) long per DuPont; 1.75″ diameter per listing | 2″ internal-diameter membrane housing | Under-sink RO | Match GPD and format; not a micron-rated part |
| In-line post filter (T33 style) | Often listed about 10″ x 2″ | No housing; in-line with 1/4″ fittings | RO final stage | Fitting type (quick-connect or threaded) varies; not confirmed from manufacturer data |
| Proprietary or quick-change | Brand-specific | Brand-specific head or twist-lock | Branded purifiers | Generally not interchangeable with standard cartridges |
“Big Blue” is the name Pentair uses for its Pentek 4.5″ diameter housings. Many sellers now use “Big Blue” or “jumbo” generically for any 4.5″ diameter housing.
7 Water Filter Cartridge Types Explained

The seven types below cover most residential water filter cartridges found in UAE homes. Contaminant-reduction statements are limited to what manufacturers or public-health sources state. Prices are from Amazon.ae listings checked on 26 September 2026. Larger whole-house cartridges and housings are covered in the whole house water filters guide.
1. Sediment PP Cartridge
A polypropylene cartridge that physically traps particles. It is usually stage 1 of an RO system and the first stage of whole-house filtration.
- Media: spun, melt-blown or string-wound polypropylene, or pleated media (the Pentair OMNIFilter RS1 uses pleated cellulose on a polypropylene core)
- Common sizes: 10″ x 2.5″, 20″ x 2.5″, 10″ x 4.5″ and 20″ x 4.5″
- Micron ratings: typically 1-50 micron; dual-gradient versions such as Pentek’s DGD series combine layers (for example 25/1 micron)
- Reduces: sand, silt, rust and scale flakes
- Does not reduce: dissolved salts (TDS), hardness or chlorine taste and odour
- Replacement: six to nine months in a home, per Pentair; some listings suggest three to four months
- UAE price: about AED 9-35 per 10″ x 2.5″ cartridge
- Watch for: fine ratings clog faster where sediment is heavy; check end-cap style
2. Carbon Block (CTO) Cartridge
Activated carbon, often from coconut shell, compressed into a solid block. CTO stands for chlorine, taste and odour. In RO systems it protects the membrane from chlorine.
- Common sizes: 10″ x 2.5″, 20″ x 2.5″ and 20″ x 4.5″
- Micron ratings: frequently listed around 5 or 10 micron
- Reduces: chlorine taste and odour; some blocks are certified for more, which should be checked on the certification listing, not the retail listing
- Does not reduce: dissolved mineral salts, so TDS usually changes little
- Replacement: six to 12 months for carbon, per Pentair
- UAE price: about AED 42.50 (20″ x 2.5″) to AED 135 (20″ Big Blue)
- Watch for: higher pressure drop than loose carbon; needs a sediment stage before it
3. GAC (Granular Activated Carbon) Cartridge
Loose carbon granules inside a plastic shell. It usually gives better flow than a carbon block.
- Common sizes: 10″ x 2.5″ in RO systems; radial-flow 10″ x 4.5″ versions such as the Culligan RFC-BBSA for whole-house housings
- Micron ratings: iSpring lists its FG15 at 5 micron; Culligan lists the RFC-BBSA at 25 micron nominal
- Reduces: chlorine taste and odour, according to iSpring and Culligan
- Does not reduce: dissolved salts or hardness
- Replacement: iSpring rates the FG15 at 3,000 gallons (about 11,350 litres); Culligan lists the RFC-BBSA at 10,000 gallons or three months
- UAE price: about AED 28-70 per 10″ x 2.5″ cartridge
- Watch for: flush before use to clear carbon fines; the Amazon.ae title for the RFC-BBSA calls it a sediment filter, while Culligan describes it as carbon, so check the manufacturer’s page
4. UF (Ultrafiltration) Cartridge
A hollow-fibre membrane cartridge used in UF purifiers and some combined systems.
- Common sizes: often 10″ in-line quick-connect or flat-end formats, less standardised than PP or carbon
- Pore size: approximately 0.01 micron, according to the CDC’s household treatment guide
- Reduces: the CDC guide rates ultrafiltration as very highly effective against protozoa and bacteria and moderately effective against viruses; individual cartridges depend on their certification
- Does not reduce: dissolved salts; the CDC rates it low against chemicals
- Replacement: not confirmed for UAE-available products; follow the system manufacturer
- UAE price: about AED 69-200, mostly on listings shipped from outside the UAE
- Watch for: connection type must match the system
5. RO Membrane
The reverse osmosis element, a semi-permeable membrane in a cylindrical element that fits a membrane housing. It is the RO water filter cartridge responsible for most of the dissolved-solids reduction.

- Format: many under-sink systems use the 1812 format; DuPont lists the FilmTec BW60-1812-75 at 11.74 inches (298 mm) long, and the listing states a 1.75 inch diameter for 2 inch internal-diameter housings
- Rating: output in gallons per day (GPD) and salt rejection, not microns; DuPont lists 75 GPD and 99% stabilised salt rejection (minimum 96%) under its test conditions
- Reduces: dissolved solids and, according to the CDC, some chemicals including lead, copper, chromium, chloride and sodium, depending on the system
- Limitation: DuPont lists free chlorine tolerance below 0.1 ppm, which is why carbon stages sit before the membrane
- Replacement: every two years per Pentair; three to five years for APEC standard systems
- UAE price: about AED 69-238 for 75 GPD membranes
- Watch for: match the GPD rating and format to the system’s pump, flow restrictor and tank
6. Post Carbon Cartridge
A small carbon cartridge, often an in-line “T33” style unit, placed after the RO storage tank as a final taste and odour stage.
- Common sizes: often described as about 10″ x 2″ with 1/4″ connections; not confirmed from manufacturer documentation
- Media: usually coconut shell GAC
- Does not reduce: dissolved salts
- Replacement: varies widely; APEC lists three to five years for its standard systems, so the system manual is the reference
- UAE price: most Amazon.ae listings checked (about AED 66-214) shipped from outside the UAE
- Watch for: fitting type (quick-connect or threaded) and flow direction
7. Specialist and Combination Cartridges
Cartridges built for one job, such as ceramic candles, KDF blends, mineral or alkaline cartridges, scale-inhibiting cartridges and fluoride-reduction cartridges.
- Example: Doulton’s test data lists the Sterasyl ceramic candle at 0.9 micron absolute, with a six-month or 2,300-litre life
- Reduces: only what the manufacturer documents; mineral cartridges add minerals rather than remove them, and scale-inhibiting cartridges do not remove hardness
- UAE price: about AED 30 (generic mineral cartridge) to AED 90 (Doulton Sterasyl)
- Watch for: specific threads, such as the BSP thread on the Sterasyl; often not interchangeable with generic cartridges

| Type | Main Function | Sediment | Chlorine / Taste / Odour | Dissolved Solids (TDS) | Best Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sediment (PP) | Physical particle capture | Yes | No | No | First stage in most systems |
| Carbon (GAC or CTO) | Adsorption | Limited (carbon block captures some fine particles) | Yes, per manufacturer documentation | No meaningful reduction | Chlorine protection and taste stages |
| RO membrane | Membrane separation | Relies on pre-filters | Relies on carbon pre-filters; membrane is chlorine-sensitive | Yes, the main TDS-reducing stage | Drinking water from an under-sink RO system |
Water Filter Cartridge Micron Ratings Explained

On mobile, scroll sideways to see the full table.
| Micron Rating | Particle Size | Typical Application | Advantages | Potential Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 micron | 0.001 mm | Final sediment stage, fine polishing | Captures very fine particles | Can clog faster where sediment is heavy |
| 5 micron | 0.005 mm | RO pre-filter, general sediment control | Common, widely available | May load quickly after tank cleaning or pipe work |
| 10 micron | 0.01 mm | General sediment with better flow | Balance of capture and flow | Lets finer particles through |
| 20 micron | 0.02 mm | Higher-sediment supplies, first stage | Longer life in heavy sediment | Limited fine-particle capture |
| 50 micron | 0.05 mm | Coarse pre-filtration | Protects finer stages downstream | Not suitable as the only sediment stage for fine particles |
Nominal vs absolute ratings
The CDC explains that an absolute 1 micron filter has every pore at 1 micron or smaller, while a nominal 1 micron filter has an average pore size of 1 micron, with some pores larger. Many retail sediment cartridges do not state which applies, so two “5 micron” cartridges may perform differently.
Why the lowest rating is not always correct
Choosing the finest possible rating can reduce flow, increase pressure drop and shorten cartridge life. Many whole-house and RO systems stage cartridges from coarse to fine so that each stage lasts longer. The system manufacturer’s recommended rating is usually the best starting point.
Certification classes
NSF/ANSI 42 includes particulate reduction classes. Class I covers the finest particles (0.5 to 1 micron) and Class VI covers coarse particles of 50 micron and larger. A cartridge certified to a particulate class has been tested, which is different from a micron number stated only in a listing.
How Often Should You Change a Water Filter Cartridge?
There is no universal UAE replacement interval. The answer to how often should you change water filter cartridge components depends on:
- Cartridge type
- The manufacturer’s rated life (months or litres)
- Litres processed and household consumption
- Sediment load, including after tank cleaning or plumbing work
- Pressure and flow changes
- Local water conditions, which vary between buildings and emirates
- Filter design and system layout
Manufacturer guidance reviewed for this guide:
On mobile, scroll sideways to see the full table.
| Cartridge | Guidance | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Sediment (home) | Six to nine months | Pentair home filtration blog |
| Carbon | Six to 12 months | Pentair home filtration blog |
| RO pre-filters | Six to 18 months (Pentair); every year for APEC standard systems | Pentair, APEC |
| RO membrane | Every two years (Pentair); three to five years for APEC standard systems | Pentair, APEC |
| Culligan RFC-BBSA | 10,000 gallons or three months | Culligan |
| iSpring FG15 GAC | 3,000 gallons rated capacity | iSpring |
| Doulton Sterasyl | Six months or 2,300 litres | Doulton |
Pentair’s commercial guidance also notes that heavy sediment shortens cartridge life and that cartridges should be changed when a housing pressure gauge reaches its red zone, where fitted. Writing the installation date on the cartridge or housing makes tracking easier.
Signs a Water Filter Cartridge May Need Replacing

Knowing when to change water filter cartridge components is easier with a few checks:
- Reduced flow from the filtered tap
- Pressure reduction, or a pressure gauge in the red zone where fitted
- Reaching the rated capacity in litres or gallons
- A manufacturer replacement indicator or app alert
- Reaching the manufacturer’s specified time interval
- A noticeable taste or odour change, particularly for carbon stages
- Visible sediment build-up in transparent housings
- For RO systems, a rising TDS reading on the product water compared with earlier readings
Appearance alone cannot verify filtration performance. A carbon cartridge can look clean after its adsorption capacity is used up, and a discoloured sediment cartridge is doing its job. Time and capacity limits still apply when a cartridge looks acceptable. A new cartridge also does not remove limescale that has already formed on taps and glass; see the guide to hard water stains in UAE homes.
How to Change a Water Filter Cartridge
The steps below describe how to change water filter cartridge units in common housing-type systems. Manufacturer-specific instructions always take priority, particularly for quick-change heads, in-line cartridges and RO membranes.

- Identify the correct replacement cartridge by model number, size, media and micron rating.
- Shut off the water supply to the filter, and the feed valve and tank valve on RO systems.
- Relieve housing pressure using the pressure-release button or by opening the filtered tap, where applicable.
- Open the housing using the correct housing wrench. Avoid improvised tools that can crack housings.
- Remove the old cartridge and note its orientation.
- Clean the housing according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Some manufacturers specify mild soap and rinsing; others specify sanitising products.
- Inspect the O-ring or seal for cracks or flattening. Lubricate only with a lubricant the manufacturer approves, if any.
- Install the replacement cartridge, centred on the housing’s locating points, in the correct flow direction.
- Reassemble and hand-tighten, or tighten as the manufacturer specifies.
- Restore water gradually to avoid pressure shock.
- Check for leaks at the housing and fittings, and again after a few hours.
- Flush according to manufacturer instructions. Carbon cartridges often release fine carbon at first use, and RO systems usually require the first tank or tanks to be discarded.
For RO membranes, the membrane housing cap and membrane seating differ between systems, so the system manual is essential. Tenants may also need to check with building maintenance before working on shared or landlord-installed equipment.
Genuine vs Compatible Water Filter Cartridges
On mobile, scroll sideways to see the full table.
| Factor | OEM / Genuine | Compatible / Third-Party |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Usually higher | Usually lower |
| Fit certainty | Designed for the system | Relies on the seller’s compatibility claim |
| Performance documentation | Usually published by the system manufacturer | Varies; sometimes limited to the listing |
| Certifications | Often listed on the system documentation | Some carry their own certification; many make unverified claims |
| Availability in the UAE | Depends on the brand’s local distribution | Often wider on Amazon.ae and from local suppliers |
| Warranty implications | Supports manufacturer warranty terms | Some manufacturers limit warranty if non-approved parts are used; check the warranty terms |
When choosing a water filter replacement cartridge, neither category is automatically better. Standard-size sediment cartridges from well-documented brands are often reasonable substitutes. For RO membranes, proprietary cartridges and certified health-claim stages, the original specification carries more weight. Retailer descriptions are not independent evidence of performance; certification should be checked on the certifier’s own database.

How Much Does Water Filter Cartridge Replacement Cost Per Year?
Two formulas help compare options:
PACK PRICE ÷ NUMBER OF CARTRIDGES = PRICE PER CARTRIDGE
CARTRIDGE PRICE x REPLACEMENTS PER YEAR = ESTIMATED ANNUAL CARTRIDGE COST
The examples below use prices checked on 26 September 2026. Systems with different stages and intervals should be calculated separately rather than compared directly.
Example 1: under-sink RO system (three pre-filters + membrane)
- Pre-filter set: AED 59.99, replaced every 6-18 months (Pentair) = about AED 40-120 a year
- Membrane: AED 125 every 2-3 years = about AED 42-63 a year
- Estimated total: about AED 82-183 a year, before any post-filter or mineral cartridge
Example 2: slim 10″ sediment housing
- AED 59.99 ÷ 3 = AED 20.00 per cartridge
- AED 20.00 x 3-4 replacements = AED 60-80 a year
Example 3: 10″ Big Blue whole-house carbon stage
- Culligan RFC-BBSA at AED 39.99, replaced every three months per Culligan
- AED 39.99 x 4 = AED 159.96 a year
Example 4: 20″ Big Blue two-stage villa system
- Sediment: AED 150 ÷ 2 = AED 75 per cartridge, x 2-4 replacements = AED 150-300 a year
- Carbon block: AED 135 x 1-2 replacements = AED 135-270 a year
- Estimated total: about AED 285-570 a year
Heavy sediment, higher consumption or a smaller household can move these figures up or down. Before buying any new filtration system, checking that its replacement cartridges are available in the UAE, and at what price, avoids unexpected running costs.
Where to Buy Water Filter Cartridges in the UAE
When checked on 26 September 2026:
- Amazon.ae (UAE-shipped offers): sediment, GAC, carbon block, Big Blue cartridges, RO membranes and ceramic candles were available, several with low stock
- Amazon.ae (cross-border offers): most UF cartridges and in-line T33 post filters shipped from outside the UAE
- UAE water-treatment suppliers: cartridge ranges were listed online, but prices were not displayed, so availability was not confirmed
For proprietary cartridges and RO membranes, the original system supplier or its UAE distributor is often the most reliable route, because the fit is confirmed.

Common Water Filter Cartridge Buying Mistakes
- Buying by appearance rather than model number and size
- Assuming all 10-inch cartridges are identical, when actual length and diameter vary slightly
- Ignoring the micron rating, or choosing the finest rating by default
- Using the wrong filtration media for a stage, such as sediment in place of carbon ahead of an RO membrane
- Buying cartridges that only claim compatibility in the listing
- Ignoring flow-rate requirements for whole-house systems
- Comparing pack prices instead of annual replacement cost
- Buying a system before checking replacement-cartridge availability in the UAE
- Assuming more filtration stages always means better filtration
Final Verdict
There is no universal best water filter cartridge. The right choice is the one that fits the housing, uses the correct media for its stage, matches the rating the system was designed for, and can be replaced affordably in the UAE.
A reliable purchasing sequence:
- Identify the system or housing.
- Confirm the size.
- Confirm the cartridge type.
- Confirm the micron rating.
- Check compatibility with the manufacturer.
- Verify the replacement interval.
- Compare UAE availability.
- Calculate the annual cost.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should a water filter cartridge be changed?
It depends on the cartridge type and manufacturer. Pentair lists six to nine months for home sediment filters, six to 12 months for carbon and about two years for RO membranes, while heavy sediment shortens cartridge life.
How do I know which water filter cartridge I need?
Check the model number on the old cartridge or system manual, then confirm length, diameter, media, micron rating and fitting type before ordering.
Are all 10-inch water filter cartridges interchangeable?
No. Slim (about 2.5″) and Big Blue (about 4.5″) cartridges differ in diameter, actual lengths vary slightly, and media and micron ratings must still suit the stage.
What micron water filter cartridge should I use?
Use the rating the system manufacturer specifies. As a general pattern, 5 micron is common for RO pre-filters, while 20-50 micron suits coarse first-stage filtration.
Is a 5-micron or 20-micron filter better?
Neither is better in every case. A 5-micron cartridge captures finer particles but may clog faster; a 20-micron cartridge lasts longer in heavy sediment but lets finer particles through.
What is the difference between sediment and carbon cartridges?
Sediment cartridges physically trap particles such as sand and rust. Carbon cartridges adsorb chlorine taste and odour. Neither is designed to remove dissolved salts.
Can I use a compatible cartridge instead of the original?
Often yes for standard sizes, if dimensions, media and rating match. For RO membranes, proprietary cartridges and certified stages, the original or a documented equivalent is safer. Check warranty terms.
How much does a water filter cartridge cost in the UAE?
In Amazon.ae listings checked on 26 September 2026, sediment cartridges cost about AED 9-35 each, carbon cartridges about AED 28-135 and 75 GPD RO membranes about AED 69-238.
Can a water filter cartridge reduce TDS?
Only an RO membrane meaningfully reduces TDS among common household cartridges. Sediment, carbon and UF cartridges generally leave TDS almost unchanged, and mineral cartridges can raise it.
Where can I buy water filter cartridges in the UAE?
Amazon.ae has many UAE-shipped options, and several UAE water-treatment suppliers list cartridge ranges online. For proprietary cartridges, the original system supplier is often the most reliable source.
